MMI interviews: what to expect and how to prepare

How the format works

An MMI is a circuit of short timed stations, each scored independently by a different assessor. A weak station therefore does far less damage than a weak panel interview, which is why practising recovery matters as much as practising content.

The station types that recur

Formats vary by university, but most circuits draw from a familiar set.

• Ethical scenarios — consent, confidentiality, capacity, resource allocation
• Communication role-play with an actor
• Motivation and insight into the profession
• Data, calculation or prioritisation tasks
• Teamwork or task-based practical stations

Practise out loud, against a clock

Silent preparation does not transfer. Use a simple framework — acknowledge the issue, consider perspectives, state a reasoned action — and rehearse it verbally until timing feels natural.
