Pharmacy

Pharmacy is the study of medicines — how they work, how they are made and how they are used safely. UK pharmacists qualify through an MPharm degree followed by a foundation training year before registering with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Overview

What is pharmacy?

Pharmacy is the science and practice of medicines: how a drug is designed and made, what it does inside the body, and how it is used safely for a particular patient. The MPharm sits between laboratory science and direct patient care, and both halves are examined.

Modern UK pharmacy has moved well beyond dispensing. Pharmacists run clinics, review complex medication regimes, advise prescribers and — increasingly — prescribe themselves. If you want daily patient contact without the surgical or diagnostic side of medicine, this is the pathway that fits.

Getting in

Entry requirements

What universities generally look for. We deliberately do not list grades — those are set course by course.

Typical grades

  • Typical A-level offers range from AAB to BBB
  • Chemistry is almost always required, usually with a second science or Maths
  • BTEC, Highers, IB and Access to HE routes are accepted at many schools

GCSE requirements

  • English, Maths and Science are usually required
  • Specific grades vary by university

Typical qualifications accepted

  • A-levels including Chemistry, usually with a second science or Maths
  • Scottish Highers, IB and BTEC routes accepted at many schools
  • Access to HE Diploma and foundation-year entry widely available

Admissions tests

  • No national admissions test for the MPharm at most universities

Interviews

  • Most schools interview, often as a panel or short MMI
  • Expect questions on patient safety, ethics and why pharmacy over medicine

Work experience

The order successful applicants tend to work in. Exact dates move each cycle — confirm them on UCAS.

    Research courses

    Read official course pages rather than league tables. Structure, placement model and assessment style vary far more than rankings suggest.

    Compare universities

    Shortlist on entry route, location, placement setting and teaching style. Open days and virtual tours are the fastest way to rule options out.

    Gain relevant experience

    Paid work, volunteering and caring roles all count. What matters is what you can reflect on, not the prestige of the setting.

    Prepare your application

    Draft your personal statement early and get it read by someone who has not seen your previous drafts. Register for any admissions test in good time.

    Interview preparation

    Practise out loud and against a timer. Build a structure for ethical scenarios instead of memorising model answers.

    Submit through UCAS

    Some healthcare courses close earlier than the main deadline. Confirm the current dates on UCAS before you plan your autumn.

    Offers and decisions

    Compare offers on the course, not only the grades. Choose a firm and an insurance option you would genuinely be happy to attend.

    Results day

    Have a plan for each outcome, including Clearing and adjustment. Places do appear on healthcare courses on the day.

Numeracy carries unusual weight in pharmacy: most schools set a calculations assessment that must be passed outright, and registration requires 100% in the GPhC calculations paper.

A typical progression pathway. We do not publish salary figures here because NHS pay bands and private rates are renegotiated regularly.
