Pharmacy is the study of medicines — how they work, how they are made and how they are used safely. UK pharmacists qualify through an MPharm degree followed by a foundation training year before registering with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
Medicine is the most competitive undergraduate route in the UK. Applicants are limited to four medicine choices on UCAS, sit an admissions test and are almost always interviewed before receiving an offer.
Dentistry combines clinical science with hands-on practical skill. UK dental students begin treating patients relatively early and qualify with a BDS before completing dental foundation training.
Nursing degrees are split into fields — adult, children's, mental health and learning disability. Around half of the course is spent on supervised clinical placement, and graduates register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Optometrists are primary eye-care clinicians who examine vision, detect ocular disease and prescribe corrections. Qualification involves an accredited degree followed by supervised pre-registration training before joining the General Optical Council register.
Allied health professions cover a broad group of clinical careers including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, radiography, paramedic science, speech and language therapy and dietetics. Most are three-year degrees leading to registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.
